Within the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area rests Tonala, a city popular for its pottery, street markets, and handcrafted goods. Prior to the arrival of the Spanish in the 1530s, a woman called Cihualpilli Tzapotzinco ruled the region under her dominion and a statue stands at the foot of Cerro de la Reina, also known as Queen's Hill, to honor her memory. Today the city features the popular Museu Nacional de la Ceramica which houses over 500 pre-Hispanic ceramic artifacts from the Jalisco state; the White Cross Chapel, and the Sun Festival in spring.
