The lush hills of Sintra are home to many castles, estates and wooded parks. The region lies northwest of Lisbon not far from the Atlantic Ocean. King Ferdinand II added much character to the area in the 19th century, making it the first center of Romantic architecture in Europe. Sites to see include the National Palace of Pena, the Quinta da Regaleira and the Castle of the Moors.
