The impressive Benedictine abbey overlooking the Danube River features exceptional baroque architecture and superb interior art frescoes. Melk Abbey in Melk, Austria was established in 1089 after Margrave of Austria Leopold II donated the palace to monks. The abbey's current structure was built built from 1702 and 1736 and designed by Jakob Prandtauer. The complex features a museum, church, library and marble hall. Melk Abbey's library has approximately 16,000 medieval books!
