Ceske Budejovice's most notable landmark is this 16th century Gothic Renaissance-style tower that has nine floors and rises 237 feet Black Tower was completed in 1577 and went by many previous names including the New Tower, Parish Tower and Town Tower. Its current name originated during the 18th century because it had been deteriorating. The original purpose of Black Tower was to protect the city from attack. A guard lived in the tower with his family up until the 1950s. Black Tower offers an exceptional panoramic view of Ceske Budejovice.
