This northern Portuguese city is famous for its ceramics and pottery. Its Thursday markets are legendary, with local artisans displaying their craftsmanship. Barcelos' symbol is the rooster and you'll be hard-pressed to find a corner of town where its image can't be seen. Visit the Museum of Archeology, an open-air museum dedicated to the rich history of the city. Barcelos is also a stop along the Way of St. James pilgrimage route and walking paths can be found throughout town. Be sure to join the locals on a sunny day on the sandy beaches of the Cavado River.
