See Germany’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Dom, in this city located in a border triangle with Belgium and the Netherlands. Aachen’s Dom (cathedral) is the burial place of the Emperor Charlemagne, who made Aachen the geographical and political capital of his far-flung Frankish Empire. The Dom is also where more than 30 German kings were crowned. Aachen is also known for its healing mineral springs and the Katschhof, a revered historic square near the Dom that still contains buildings dating back to when it was part of Charlemagne’s palace.
